Papilionidae

In Colombia, this family is represented by 65 species and 128 subspecies approximately distributed across 8 generes: Battus, Parides, Mimoines, Protographium, Protesilaus, Heraclides,  Pterourus and Papilio. They are commonly known as butterflies "Swallow Tails" although not all genera have tails on the hindwings.This family is recognized by its robust body, three pairs of legs well developed, short antennae and curved upwards, large compound eyes and wing size medium to large.Adults are distinguished from other families by their habit of flapping wings as they suck nectar and often hover like a hummingbird.
